Audience development and educational outreach programs

So, there seems to be a new discussion as of late to continue the debate about whether or not educational outreach programs are worth the time and effort for audience development purposes.  I used to say hands down that they are, but now I am slowly leaning towards saying maybe they are not worth it, that is if they are not really audience development programs.

I have made a major discovery.  If audience development is about building relationships with your audience, are you building relationships with the children of your community through your educational outreach programs?  Mainly most educational outreach programs are “tastes” of the art, a little here and a little there to expose children to an art form.  Now on one level, yes it is beneficial for the children, especially when added to a creative thinking lesson plan, but this type of marketing exposure is not going to translate into a slew of future patrons or “butts in seats.”  There is a lack of follow through in this equation.

Now, true audience development is not butts in seats, but rather people in seats.  The only way to obtain more people in seats that continue to come back time and again is to build relationships with them in one way or another.

Let’s put these two concepts together now.  If audience development, true audience development, is about building relationships, the only way an educational outreach program would be successful in the future is if you add an element of building relationships with the children of your community.  This means that you start to have conversations with them and get to know them as people.  You will then be able to discover who the real arts lovers are.  My 1st grade music teacher was a natural at this.  She would notice when her kids were interested, and she developed a relationship with these kids (myself included).  I was nurtured from that day forward for my love of the arts, and yes, I do buy tickets to a variety of arts offerings throughout the year.

In summary, educational outreach programs can be effective for both arts education and for the future of the arts, but only if they are initiated with a true audience development spirit – with the goal and the care to get to know the children of your community and to nurture them when they show a bigger interest in the arts.

Audience Development and Friday YouTube Mood

I finally updated my YouTube Gallery page.  Before June vanishes, I wanted to share with you a sample of how classical music is a part of our culture and is quite popular in its usage in commercials.

You can sample them here:

Also for your enjoyment, here is my playlist of classical music and cartoons.  Cartoons are a great way to introduce classical music and the arts in general.  Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Audience development and what I have learned over the vast arts weekend

This is not going to be the typical summary blog.  I was not able to attend any of the conferences this weekend, but was able to catch some of what was happening via Twitter and Livestream.  We had the TCG (Theatre Communications Group) conference and the AFTA (American for the Arts) conference this past weekend.  The following is my list of personal observations, rants and raves, and general comments:

  1. The TCG conference did a great job of communicating and inspiring excitement for the future.
  2. AFTA did have some good arts advocacy sessions which I hope gets transpired into action.
  3. The theatre community is excellent at discussing the issues and sharing them across the internet.
  4. The speakers hired for TCG were vibrant and inspiring.  The speakers at AFTA, I had a mixed reaction to.
  5. There was much talk about wooing the Millennials, but I felt that the GenX crowd is being squeezed out of the picture.
  6. Maybe I am wrong, but I noticed that Millennials and Boomers were hired for the most part.  We could use more GenX in the arts in general.
  7. The State of the Artist was a very interesting format at TCG, a variety of different presentations to give us the lowdown on what is happening.  The research regarding the statistics of how much an average artist makes, etc. was good to know.  However, many of us already know about these facts and figures since we live them.
  8. In general, I have heard some of the same discussions about our challenges before and have read about them from articles and essays from decades ago.  We need to start taking more action and quit talking about what is wrong.  We know what is wrong.  We live what is wrong.  It is time to make some changes so we can find out how to live what is right.   Money would be better spent on speakers that will present action oriented speeches, speeches that give take away lists for all of us to implement.  We need more idea/brainstorming sessions.  We need to instead of placing money on statistical research, fund more action oriented audience development projects.
  9. Some of the speakers were talking about audience development, but did not necessarily know it.  Nor did they get to the action part of audience development.
  10. People who know me will already know that I feel audience development and the action that is part of using it will help save the arts.  Yet, I am rarely seeing presentations that give the arts world a clue about how to use audience development.  I continually hear, “we need audience development,” but presenters are not hired to cover this need fully.
  11. Bigger organizations can help smaller organizations.  They only need to get past the fears so they can help their arts sector.  They will be helping themselves in the process.
  12. There is a great deal of fear when it comes to money.  Artists and organizations need to learn how to prioritize so the money that they do have is smartly spent, which will help alleviate some of this fear.
  13. There was a statistic that only a small percentage like 9-11% of funding comes from grants.  We are spending so much time and energy discussing the fact that these pots are being cut.  If 89% -91% of arts funding is from individual and corporate funding, how come we are not discussing how to secure this type of  funding more?  (Audience development helps secure this type of funding.  Let’s talk about audience development and how it can help increase this funding for you).
  14. Maybe I missed hearing about case studies, but I feel we need more of these at conferences.  We need to learn what is working and what is not working.  One of the best presentations I witnessed a few years back was when a theatre company presented how they do subscriptions.  They were wildly successful with subscriptions.  If subscriptions are dying out, how come this theatre company was doing so well?  (They didn’t know it, but it was audience development.)  We need to find out from each other how to be successful.
  15. In order to start helping each other out, we need to end the fears about competition.  We need to swallow our egos so we can instead create a healthy base for all arts.
  16. We need more advocacy for the arts.  It is not a matter of simply believing the arts needs more support, we need to as individuals start visually and verbally showing the world that we want more arts supports – more letters to media and our representatives, more physical badges online, more arts advocacy projects and events.
  17. I really wished I was hired for one or more of the conventions this year.  I do have something to share and hope I will be able to in the future.
  18. I was saddened over the weekend thinking about the shutdowns that have been happening.  There is an arts group in my own town, made the papers this morning,  that really could use some help in turning around.
  19. I am here wanting to contribute, but making less money than most artists and arts organizations.  If people do not start calling soon, ADS will need to close.  I have a feeling other audience development agencies, the few of us that are out there, are experiencing the same challenge.
  20. If consultants are making the money and the organizations/artists that they are helping are not, then you are hiring the wrong consultants.  The right consultants would make sure everyone is prosperous.  (This is in reply to a comment on twitter about how only consultants are making the money these days).
  21. Arts people in general have big hearts and want to make a difference in their world.  I hope that the solutions to the challenges presented come swiftly and that action is taken quickly to save the arts from falling even further than they have already.

If you need to build a bigger and better audience, if you need more financial support, if you are ready to learn and make the changes necessary using audience development action, please contact ADS.  ADS wants to help!

Phone sessions, group workshops, seminars and presentations, social/digital media packages – we are affordable and we help you make the changes needed so you can grow in a positive direction.

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Audience Development & The Emerging Practice Seminar 2011

On April 29th a group called CultureLab hosted its Emerging Practice Seminar.  The Emerging Practice Seminar ” is a concerted effort to bring forward promising new practices in the cultural sector and transmit them to the field.”

The 2011 seminar focused on:

  • Uses of technology in audience engagement
  • Revenue management and dynamic pricing

After viewing the presentations, here are my top picks for the audience engagement topic :

Uses of Technology in Audience Engagement – Tim Roberts from Cultural Policy Center on Vimeo.

Mobile Interaction: adding content and context – Ron Evans from Cultural Policy Center on Vimeo.

Foursquare & the Arts – Devon Smith from Cultural Policy Center on Vimeo.

Steppenwolf On Camera – Linda Garrison and Thomas Weitz from Cultural Policy Center on Vimeo.

The reason I chose these presentations is due to the fact that they give a broader overview and they were more engaging.  I found it ironic that some of these presentations about audience engagement were not particularly engaging.  They all, however, had good information.  If you have the time, I do recommend watching a few more.  You can find all the presentations on the Cultural Policy Center’s (University of Chicago) website.  I will be choosing my favorites from the second half of the day next week.

Until then, I would like to invite you to a web panel discussion that I will be hosting.  We will be talking about New Plays/New Audiences with David J. Loehr, Co-Founder of 2amt, and Playwright Gwydion Suilebhan.   Join us on Vokle, tomorrow (Friday, June 17th) at 10 am ET.

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Lost #auddev chat from 3/18: Theatre, Social Media & Audience Development

On Friday, March 18th, we had a guest host for an #auddev Twitter chat, Praxis Theatre based in Toronto, Canada.  They decided to do a chat about social media and audience development for Canadian theatres and invite the world to join them.  I had created a transcript for this event, but found out today that the transcript is no longer available.  Below is the re-creation of the transcript, and this time it will be solidified on my blog for further reference.
The conversation had some discussion about whether or not to allow tweeting during a performance, how to use different social media platforms effectively, what is working and what is not working.
Enjoy the following transcript, and if you have any comments, feel free to leave a reply below!

Audience Development, Peter Gabriel and Orchestras

Last night I went to see one of my favorite artists, Peter Gabriel.  He is right up there with the Beatles, Sting/The Police, and all my favorite classical music composers.  For this concert tour, Peter Gabriel was being backed by his own orchestra, the New Blood orchestra.  He chose particular songs to have arranged (brilliantly, I will add by John Metcalfe) so the mix was a little more on the mellow side.  There was no “Big Time” or “Sledgehammer,” but instead moving and powerful renditions of “Mercy Street” and “Blood of Eden.”

I’m not here to review the concert per se, although I highly recommend going to see this concert, but I am here to tell you that the crowd was not only hooting and hollering for Peter, they were also very excited about the orchestra.   The orchestra was mainly comprised of  musicians from the local area and the UK.  The conductor, Ben Foster, looked very young, but was extremely polished. These musicians played with such passion and conviction that you couldn’t help cheer them on.

I have no idea if other people in this audience were orchestral fans or as big of a Peter Gabriel fan as I am, but the audience was right there with me in acknowledging powerfully performed music.

Aside from the high quality content of this concert, the execution was audience friendly.  Peter told stories of how a song came into fruition to lead into the music.  Having a better understanding of the song led to a deeper enjoyment of the music.  He was gracious in always giving nods to his fellow musicians, and he definitely seemed to being having a wonderful time, always adding his personal theatrical flair.

Of course Peter couldn’t help adding a multi-media show with video images on a finely meshed backdrop.  It served as a curtain for the orchestra as well.  He is a highly creative individual that has to share the many sides of his artistry.  The video shared the many sides of the music, including the performers themselves.

Even when it rained, perhaps due to his heavy choice of water image songs, the crowd continued to be enthralled the entire time.  I was getting bathed and soaked in both rain and wondrous music.   This means that despite the set backs of the venue or any happenstance, there was no way the audience was budging from this amazing night.

Now back to the orchestra.  There has been a trend with musicians wanting to go on tour with an orchestra, and I do not see this trend letting up.  Just today I saw another article Deep Purple Guitarist Talks North American Orchestral Tour.  There is a draw for musicians to spread their wings, and working with an orchestra can provide a new outlet for their music.  This has many advantages for the orchestra world if they are smart enough to see these advantages.

First, there are new audiences being introduced to the sounds of an orchestra in a format that is already pleasing to them, a rock concert.  The audience usually ends up cheering on the orchestra as well as the main artist.  Some of the audience will take a liking to how an orchestra sounds and seek out recordings and concerts in the future.  Here is the biggest advantage, if you are an orchestra in the area and happen to have one of these types of concerts in town, you better believe I recommend finding a way to reach this new audience.

Our local theatre performance center had a chat session during the Tonys.  I can envision local orchestras equally latching on to this opportunity by hosting Twitter chats or Facebook posts, etc.  Or, perhaps finding a way for the venue or artist to mention going to see a performance of a local orchestra.  If there is a will, there is a way.

Also, if there are local musicians performing, like there were on this concert, find a way to connect with them.  Perhaps they can be personality advocates for the orchestras in the area and reach the audience by tweeting what is it like to perform with someone like Peter Gabriel.  There are people in the audience that would enjoy getting this backstage perspective.

Lastly, I would recommend attending one of these events yourself and take notes as to how the concert is executed.  The orchestra world can learn a great deal from one of these concerts, as aforementioned.  Would it really hinder us to program new and interesting music that an audience can relate to and get excited about, and allow them to applaud when highly moved after a solo?  Mozart enjoyed it.

New audiences such as the ones that attend these types of concerts are ready and waiting if we find ways to reach them, but we must make the effort to reach them.  We could stand to shed our high orchestral ideals and learn from the world around us, even if it is outside of our genre.  Peter Gabriel and the New Blood Orchestra put on a concert that could teach us many lessons that are vastly needing to be learned.

If you would like a real review of the concert, click here!

Today we had another #auddev chat on Twitter.  This time my co-host was Dave Charest,  Marketing Director/Producer with Astoria Performing Arts Center.  The topic was Theatre and Social Media.  We mentioned best practices for the majority of social media platforms as well as an overall philosophy for using social media to build audiences.  Below is the full conversation.

Audience development & arts advocacy for arts funding

These are strange times.  For every arts cut story I find in news sources across the country, there is at least a story to match of an arts group raising money to help a community.    Today there was an arts cuts article for Wisconsin, and meanwhile in Joplin, MO, there was an article of an arts festival raising funds to help rebuild the community after the devastating tornado damage.

Artists and arts organizations have been attempting to reason with politicians for many years now.  There is overwhelming evidence that the arts help us in numerous ways – economically, medically, historically, etc., etc., etc., yet for some reason there are still politicians that simply want to cut the pennies to the arts in order to save pennies.  Instead of saving money, they are actually losing money, and a whole lot more.

The evidence has been stated many times that the arts give back financially many times over compared to the money put in to fund arts programs.  Why the deaf ear and the blind eye to this fact?  In a sentence, we as a people have not done enough arts advocacy or audience development for the arts.

The tides are starting to change though.  I now am seeing arts advocacy articles, op-eds, letters to the editor pop up from time to time.  Arts celebrities are starting to come forward in a public manner with their words and their wallets.   Some politicians are fighting for the arts now.  Some.  I hope in this decade the scale starts tipping in favor of all politicians supporting the arts, but that might be a pipe dream.

So instead of dreaming, waiting and hoping, I encourage anyone and everyone that reads this blog to find one way to contribute to arts advocacy and one way to support an arts organizations or an artist by helping them to build relationships with people in their communities.  We obviously cannot count on the politicians to vote in our favor anymore.  The idea of us voting them in to serve the public interest may also be a pipe dream now.  They seem to have their own ideals and agendas they are pushing, and their own corporations and private interests that are pushing them.

To sum up this rambling post, the arts are there for us and support our communities in a variety of ways, isn’t it time for us to stand up and support the arts!

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Shoshana

Choosing the right Crowdfunding is good Audience Development

Crowdfunding has become a viable resource for raising the funds that you need as an artist and arts organization for your particular projects.  It is also a great audience development tool.  With crowdfunding, you are asking for support from your audience, and it is a great way to find out who in your audience is ready to become more involved with supporting your art!

I was researching for a client to find the right crowdfunding resource for her specific project and set of circumstances.  You may have heard of Kickstarter, RocketHub, IndieGoGo, but have you heard of some of the lesser known such as ChipIn, GoFundMe, and Kapipal?  But wait, there is more!  I found the motherload of crowdfunding lists today, and yes, I am going to share it with you (all sources that are mentioned are on this list).

Welcome to The Crowdfunding Wiki!

There are so many sources out there for specific needs.  There are options that are specific to the type of artist you are (film, music, play production). Some of these resources are strictly for non-profits while some are open to all individuals with project ideas and needs.  Some have time limitations and other limitations such as needing to make your goal before you collect any of the funds, but some don’t have strict limitations.  Some charge for the service, but get this, some are actually free to use (minus processing fees for PayPal).

With all the options out there, how do you figure out which source is best for you or your organization?  I would start by making a list of your needs. You may want to consider the following:

1. Are there age, location restrictions?
2. What are the fees or is it free?
3. Can you collect using a variety of currencies?
4. Do you need a PayPal account or not?
5. Are there limitations to how much you can raise?
6. Do you need to raise the full goal amount to receive the money or not?  Are there extra fees if not?
7. Are there limitations on time limits for raising funds?
8. Do you need to set up gifts for levels of donations? You will need to budget if so.
9. Can anyone use the resource or is it strictly for 501c3 nonprofits?
10. Can you use the money right away or do you need to wait for the deadline? Some resources allow you to use funds right away!
11. Do they have resources to help you spread the word: website, widgets, FB, Twitter, YouTube capabilities?
12. Is it easy for your donor to use?

For example,  my client, who happens to be an international musician, she needed a source that could handle different types of currencies and the ability to use without any address restrictions (since some require you to live in a certain region to use).  We also needed a resource that did not require prizes at each level to cut down on overhead costs.  Lastly, we were hoping to find a resource that was free to use, but still had the ease of connecting with social media and the ability to use digital media to outreach.  After researching this long list, I was able to narrow it down to two possibilities that fit her exact requirements.

For organizations and artists with long term goals, there are some interesting ones out there.  One that I found that has great potential is Give.fm.  This site allows donors to micro-give by increments as minimal as $.10 a day.  They can create a portfolio of causes to give to or simply give a certain amount to one main cause.  This site allows anyone at any income to donate to your cause.  It does cost $5/month/campaign, but for $60, it looks like there is potential to raise more than enough to cover that and your projects.

There are simply too many resources out there to cover all of them in this little ol’ blog, but if you make your list and check it twice, you can research to find the exact crowdfunding resource that will be user friendly for your supporters in order for them to help make your projects come to life!

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Shoshana
