Guest Post: Are artists involved in your audience development planning? They should be.

I have a guest blog post today for you.  I met Samantha at the 2012 National Arts Marketing Project Conference, and we had a good time talking about audience development and arts shenanigans in general.  I recently came across her current blog post and thought it would be fantastic to cross post it here.  Are your artists involved in your audience development planning?  I agree – the should be.  Only disagreement is her “butts in seats” comment, as you know that drives me crazy.  If you have a comment, please feel free to share in the reply box below.  Enjoy!************************************************

Are artists involved in your audience development planning? They should be.

December 4, 2012 · by · Bookmark the permalink. ·

Having worked for several years in the Symphony world, I have experienced firsthand the ‘us vs. them’ mentality between artists and management. The Symphony world is well-known for its labor disputes, musician strikes, management lockouts and general distrust of each other. But I often find it odd that performers and management have such distaste for each other when we should all be working toward the same goal – keeping our arts organizations sustainable in our communities. Some of it may be attributed to the right-brained artist mentality not understanding the left-brained business mind and vice versa, but I think there’s a lot of commonality that artists and management share that is often overlooked.  While finances are certainly at the core of this, not to be ignored are the ideas needed to continue introducing new audiences to our art form. And this is where both artists and management need to work together. So let’s take contract negotiations and budgets out of the mix for a moment and just talk about idea creation.

While I would never expect the concertmaster to write the season’s marketing plan, just as I shouldn’t be expected to play first trumpet, the two sides can work together using our own expertise on finding ways to reach untapped audiences in new and exciting ways. In my years in symphony marketing (or any marketing, for that matter), I find that there is never a lack of new ideas. Someone at least once a week says to me, “You know what you oughta do…” Most times I listen, smile, and either file the idea away or dismiss it. But here’s where I really think both sides of the organization can work together and come up with some really fabulous ways to spread the joy of our artform. I have talked with musicians who’ve said that they don’t feel like anyone listens to their ideas. And I know many staff members who feel totally cut off from having access to the musicians, even in an informal manner. Bridging the two sides can help morale all around, as well as build the opportunity to work together towards a common cause.

As stated in an earlier post, new audiences are key to keeping the relevancy and vitality of classical music alive in the 21st century. Our marketing and development teams (another key relationship in any non-profit) are focused on identifying and cultivating these soon-to-be patrons and donors. What the management side can bring to the table is doing the research to find out who these new audiences are, how and where to market to them, and how to sell them a ticket. What musicians can do is tell their story. Make themselves available to the public. Be the face of the artform that we’re promoting. They are the ones to create the relationships that are KEY in this day and age of the arts. No one really cares what the Director of Marketing says. I have a small enough ego to know that what I say isn’t worth a hill of beans (is that still a phrase?). But when a musician makes a phone call, or appears in a video, or does a radio interview? That’s when ears perk up. That’s what makes a potential audience member interested in attending the Symphony. I can send postcards and record TV spots and place newspaper ads and I’ll get a few bites. Traditional media isn’t dead. But when the artist making the art becomes involved, and perhaps makes a personal invitation, I think we’ll see a much more significant response.

As we work on our new audience initiative, I plan to involve as many musicians as I can (and who are willing) in the planning and implementation process. It can be so much more effective if I ask the musicians up front, “Hey, what kind of program should we create to attract a younger audience?” than it will if I say, “You’re doing this service on this date and time and wear this.” Get them involved in the planning by serving on task forces. Ask them to invite their yoga class or book club or softball team to a concert. Invite them to participate in pre- or post-concert discussions with patrons. The participating musicians may feel a sense of ownership if they helped create something from the ground up instead of just showing up for a performance without having any idea on how the audience got there. I have found that if you just ask the artists for input, you’ll hear back, “How can we help?” We all want more butts in seats. Let’s work together on finding effective ways to do it. [:O)]

Random thoughts on current events: audience development for the arts

Our next guest blog will be next Wednesday.  Today I have a few random thoughts due to current events this week.  This week we have seen the GM over at the Metropolitan Opera hiss at another review outlet, we have seen a major consultant for our industry disregard the rule of confidentiality when posting on Huffington Post, and there have been some wonderful audience development ideas floating around the country that were implemented.

  1. The Met reverses policy, will allow Opera News to review productions http://t.co/yn6TiJgf

Wow!  Talk about elitism at its worst.  “Allow” to review?  The GM has an issue with less than positive reviews, so he decides to axe a critic’s right to review if they do not meet his standards.  This is a poor choice of arts management on so many levels.  We need more journalism, not less for one.  If journalists continue to feel the wrath for simply doing their job, they do have the power to not cover you, period.  Plus, not having open opinions to our art work would actually harm us more in the end.  Let me expound quickly on this point.

Let’s say we do quality work for the most part, but we get a bad review on a particular performance or event.  We can use this review (with a grain of salt) to discover how we can become better for our next performance or event.  We need the feedback to continue to strive to be better.   Without this honest feedback, we are missing out on the complete artistic process.

Plus, you can honor the fact that any review is simply one person’s opinion and not the end all or be all for audience attendance.  Use the review to your advantage by getting a variety of opinions to create some buzz.  A controversial review could still catapult you to a bigger audience.  Be smart about working with journalists and critics.  Being demanding is only going to get you a bad reputation and more bad press.

2. Kaiser & the Cardinal Sin of Consultancy. http://t.co/4MExjM9L

My friend and colleague, Amy Wratchford wrote a blog for #2amt about Kaiser’s consultant faux pas.  I commented after this post to give my view of the situation.  These are my humble opinions.   Let me know your thoughts on this issue too.  For the record, I have always valued the arts commentary of Michael Kaiser, so I was very much surprised to view this particular post.

3. Foodies and music lovers unite! Listen to a Clip From Harvard’s Asparagus Opera http://t.co/6RbOgpYg

UK virtual orchestra puts you in conductor’s stand http://t.co/9C9Zy4NX

New outlet offers tickets, info on zoo, ASF, museum events in downtown Montgomery http://t.co/B567eBy0

These are three fantastic ideas that I have had in the past, but others beat me to it.  I now have positive evidence that ideas are floating all around us.  Some of us may be more in tune to these ideas than others, and it becomes a matter of who decides to implement these ideas for their benefit.  In all three of these cases, there are elements of all 4 C’s at hand, especially Collaboration.  In order to gain a better audience, a more fitting audience, it is best to collaborate with others and work on creative projects that will connect you to your community.

So there you have it – random thoughts on current events in our industry.  Please do feel free to reply if you have any random thoughts of your own.  A Wonderful Wednesday to you and yours!

#NAMPC National Arts Marketing Project Conference – Winning Audiences – Final Day

After practically no sleep, I was still excited about the last day.  This was the day I was scheduled to present!

8:45 Engaging Audiences through Collaboration and Innovation

I had a great team to work with.  Our moderator was Kory Kelly, Director of Marketing & Communications at Actors Theatre of Louisville.  Also presenting with me were Sam Read, Deputy director of Theatre Puget Sound in Seattle, Washington and Greg Fiedler, President and CEO of the Greater Flint Arts Council in Flint, Michigan.  We decided to tag team our presentations so one would lead into another.

I started off the morning of our Engage Audiences through Collaboration and Innovation with an overall look at the variety of collaborations you can achieve.  Each type of collaboration had a case study story to give an example – the case study pointed out how it engages with your audience.  This presentation was from the view point of one organization working with many other arts and community organizations.  This was a milestone presentation for me too since I vowed to never do another “PowerPoint” presentation ever again.  You can hold me to it!

My audience was a little sleepy during the beginning of my presentation, but I could see them waking up in the middle.  8:45 am?  Much too early, right?

Sam Read took the ball and presented Arts Crush.  This festival is full of creative ideas on how to get the different disciplines of the arts working together and working with the community.  Innovative programming, venues, and audience development can result when a community gets together to co-create an arts festival.  His presentation was exciting and the theme of collaboration and innovation was demonstrated perfectly.  One of my favorite quotes – Move beyond the butt!

Greg Fiedler had a video presentation that spoke about the Parade of Festivals that his Arts Council is responsible for.  The point of the presentation was to not only show how different and interesting festivals can work together to build audience, but also how the arts are changing the perception that surrounds Flint, Michigan.  Unfortunately, almost everyone raised their hands (before the video) when asked if they heard something negative about Flint.  Fortunately, everyone raised their hands when asked if the video gave them a more positive perception of Flint.  The arts are making a difference in Flint, and through collaboration (and innovation), the difference is noticed!

10:45 Closing Plenary with Sam Horn

This was an interesting move since this talk tied together all the elements of the conference – marketing, development, audience development.  We all seemed a bit brain dead and Sam Horn was speaking in codes, or rather acronyms.  The messages of her talk were extremely valuable. Some of her main points are as follows. When relating to people – don’t just tell them what you do – tell them an example of what you are doing.  Tell stories instead of relying completely on facts and figures.  Get them to raise their eyebrows by asking “Did You Know” questions and supply them with some of the most interesting details about your organization.  Lastly, relate your message to who you are speaking to.  Instead of a typical elevator speech that states your mission, which is the same for everyone, first find out who they are and then give them something to relate to about your organization. Even though I was dog tired and ready for lunch, I got the messages and agree wholeheartedly.

My Final Tweets

Lunch

My last little session of hanging with some great people.  A group of us went to hotel sports bar and grill before we left in our cars, taxis and eventually our airplanes toward home.  It was a fantastic ending to the conference – down time with folks that understand you.

Overall Impression

I have to say that all in all, NAMPC was an amazing experience.  The people I met, the presentations, the building of relationships – all factors were well worth it.  I will also say that I am proud of myself for presenting in front of my peers (which can make you a Nervous Nelly).  I am also proud of all of us that attended (well most of us) for leaving our egos at the door and being able to share our good ideas with each other.

I look forward to keeping in touch with the many people I was honored to become associated with during the conference.  If asked again to be a part of this experience, of course, I would say yes!

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Audience development thoughts for the weekend

Sometimes it is good to take time off, step away from the day to day in order to get a fresh perspective.   After a few days away, I have a few thoughts to share about obtaining new audiences.  These are thoughts in no particular order with hopes to open much more conversation.

  • If we would like to have a particular audience we need to cater to that audience.
  • Catering to a particular audience may mean changes need to be made.  If you want your art to stay the same, your audience won’t grow either.
  • However, when is it time to say “enough” when it comes to change? You don’t want to turn your art inside out and upside down in order to appeal to a new audience.  It wouldn’t be your art anymore.
  • A delicate balance needs to be established when considering making changes for a new audience.
  • You can add new elements to your typical fair.
  • You can change your typical fair in ways that will appeal more strongly to a new audience.
  • Through the changes though, it is still good to stay true to the art, the play, the music.  Don’t insult your art to gain favor with a potential audience.
  • On the flip-side, don’t insult your audience and be over controlling about your art.
  • Be open to what the new audience is looking for.  Perhaps a new presentation would benefit your art form as well.
  • Quality and care need to be a part of everything you do.  Take care to give your best to your audience.
  • Invite your audience to become a part of your art in one way or another.  Find comfortable ways for you both to engage in a two way relationship.
  • Try not to step on other people’s toes when promoting your art or contributions.  Be gracious and become partners with  other artists, organizations and your audience members.
  • Form collaborations that are win-win for everyone involved.  No one wants to feel like they received the short end of the stick.
  • Always give credit where credit is due.
  • Connect others to become more connected with others too.
  • Learn how to help others and you usually find that you are helping yourself in the process.
  • Be open to new ideas before you shoot them down.  Be open to attempting something new.
  • Be confident to keep what is working for you now.
  • Become a team with the people surrounding your art.  Try not to point fingers and play the blame game and instead, focus on solutions and being a team.  If you see an “us vs. them” mentality coming into play, you are not on the right track.
  • Invite people to your art party.  Sometimes artists do not have the support they need because they “forget” to invite/ask others to join them.
  • Be mindful of where your art fits into the world.  Be honest about who you are and what your art is.
  • Brand to your individuality.  Find what makes you special and sets you apart instead of copying the same old same old.
  • Reach out to others that would enjoy who you are and what your art is about.
  • If you want an audience to support you, you need to support them.  What do they need?
  • Always follow up and follow through.
  • Relationships are what makes it possible to get the support we need.  The stronger the relationship, the more likely people will want to support you.
  • Be honest about your relationships.  Are they two way streets or do you simply contact them when you need them (or vice versa)?
  • Spell people’s names correctly.
  • If you want a diverse audience, you need a diverse outreach program.  Not everyone speaks the same “language.”
  • If you want a diverse audience, sometimes you need to learn another “language.”
  • Be sure to thank people efficiently, timely, and memorably.
  • The quicker you realize that these points can carry over to your everyday life, the faster audience development will become more natural to you.

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Audience Development, Peter Gabriel and Orchestras

Last night I went to see one of my favorite artists, Peter Gabriel.  He is right up there with the Beatles, Sting/The Police, and all my favorite classical music composers.  For this concert tour, Peter Gabriel was being backed by his own orchestra, the New Blood orchestra.  He chose particular songs to have arranged (brilliantly, I will add by John Metcalfe) so the mix was a little more on the mellow side.  There was no “Big Time” or “Sledgehammer,” but instead moving and powerful renditions of “Mercy Street” and “Blood of Eden.”

I’m not here to review the concert per se, although I highly recommend going to see this concert, but I am here to tell you that the crowd was not only hooting and hollering for Peter, they were also very excited about the orchestra.   The orchestra was mainly comprised of  musicians from the local area and the UK.  The conductor, Ben Foster, looked very young, but was extremely polished. These musicians played with such passion and conviction that you couldn’t help cheer them on.

I have no idea if other people in this audience were orchestral fans or as big of a Peter Gabriel fan as I am, but the audience was right there with me in acknowledging powerfully performed music.

Aside from the high quality content of this concert, the execution was audience friendly.  Peter told stories of how a song came into fruition to lead into the music.  Having a better understanding of the song led to a deeper enjoyment of the music.  He was gracious in always giving nods to his fellow musicians, and he definitely seemed to being having a wonderful time, always adding his personal theatrical flair.

Of course Peter couldn’t help adding a multi-media show with video images on a finely meshed backdrop.  It served as a curtain for the orchestra as well.  He is a highly creative individual that has to share the many sides of his artistry.  The video shared the many sides of the music, including the performers themselves.

Even when it rained, perhaps due to his heavy choice of water image songs, the crowd continued to be enthralled the entire time.  I was getting bathed and soaked in both rain and wondrous music.   This means that despite the set backs of the venue or any happenstance, there was no way the audience was budging from this amazing night.

Now back to the orchestra.  There has been a trend with musicians wanting to go on tour with an orchestra, and I do not see this trend letting up.  Just today I saw another article Deep Purple Guitarist Talks North American Orchestral Tour.  There is a draw for musicians to spread their wings, and working with an orchestra can provide a new outlet for their music.  This has many advantages for the orchestra world if they are smart enough to see these advantages.

First, there are new audiences being introduced to the sounds of an orchestra in a format that is already pleasing to them, a rock concert.  The audience usually ends up cheering on the orchestra as well as the main artist.  Some of the audience will take a liking to how an orchestra sounds and seek out recordings and concerts in the future.  Here is the biggest advantage, if you are an orchestra in the area and happen to have one of these types of concerts in town, you better believe I recommend finding a way to reach this new audience.

Our local theatre performance center had a chat session during the Tonys.  I can envision local orchestras equally latching on to this opportunity by hosting Twitter chats or Facebook posts, etc.  Or, perhaps finding a way for the venue or artist to mention going to see a performance of a local orchestra.  If there is a will, there is a way.

Also, if there are local musicians performing, like there were on this concert, find a way to connect with them.  Perhaps they can be personality advocates for the orchestras in the area and reach the audience by tweeting what is it like to perform with someone like Peter Gabriel.  There are people in the audience that would enjoy getting this backstage perspective.

Lastly, I would recommend attending one of these events yourself and take notes as to how the concert is executed.  The orchestra world can learn a great deal from one of these concerts, as aforementioned.  Would it really hinder us to program new and interesting music that an audience can relate to and get excited about, and allow them to applaud when highly moved after a solo?  Mozart enjoyed it.

New audiences such as the ones that attend these types of concerts are ready and waiting if we find ways to reach them, but we must make the effort to reach them.  We could stand to shed our high orchestral ideals and learn from the world around us, even if it is outside of our genre.  Peter Gabriel and the New Blood Orchestra put on a concert that could teach us many lessons that are vastly needing to be learned.

Today I have been thinking about the year 2010. With all the “Best in 2010” articles floating around, it can’t be helped.  In the near future, I will be sifting through my tweets to find the best tweets for the 2010 Audience Development Twitter Awards.  At this moment though, I have been giving much thought to New Year’s resolutions.

2010 is nearing the end and a bright and shiny 2011 is due any day now.  What would you do differently next year?  What new ideas, programs will you want to implement? In terms of audience development, here is my “best of” advice to my fellow artists and arts organizations:

  1. Find your niche!  I cannot stress this enough. With all the new artists and arts organizations popping up, it is extremely important now to differentiate yourself from everyone else.  If you have not discovered your niche, ask yourself the following questions. What do you do better than anyone else?  What is your main focus? If others have similar missions, what makes you different from them?  In a world of saturation, you need to define what makes you special.  This defining will help get you in touch with others that relate to your niche.
  2. Brand yourself correctly so the right audience can find you.  After discovering your niche, make sure your brand matches and helps promote your niche.  It is time to individualize your marketing.  In my humble opinion, the reason why some artists and arts organizations get overlooked is due to the fact that their branding is just like everyone else’s.  I see the same old types of photographs, messages, missions and programs that everyone else is doing.  No wonder people may think the arts are not new and exciting!  It is time to be the artists that we are, creative individuals that push beyond the status quo.  Let yourself be brilliant and brand yourself so there is no doubt as to who you really are.
  3. Put the passion back into everything you do.  It is such a buzz kill to hear artists belly aching about not being recognized, not being paid enough, not selling enough, not having enough gigs… Guess what?  The audience can pick up on these vibes.  We need to ask ourselves again – Why am I creating art in the first place?  We need to put the passion back into creating and enjoying our art.  This positive vibe will also be perceived by the audience and will translate into positive actions.  Let’s be completely honest.  Maybe the arts are suffering due to lackluster offerings.  Maybe we are lackluster since our passion has been replaced by righteousness or the “we deserve better” act.  Art comes from the soul.  Without passion, the soul cannot produce high quality art.  With passion, the soul will be joyful and create offerings that other souls will be drawn to.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for support.  All artists and arts organizations need support, but many of us are afraid to ask for it.  Why?  I had a discussion yesterday about this very point.  I came to the conclusion that the reason we may have trouble asking is that we do not define our art in terms of a tangible product.  Maybe this needs to change.  The arts (proven time and time again) have many beneficial gifts for our society.  They benefit the individual and our communities.   This means that the arts can be defined in a tangible sense.  The arts are worth supporting due to these benefits.  Do yourself a favor and get over being shy of asking for support.  You have a product that is worthy of support.  Define all the benefits of your art and make it easy for someone to relate to the reasons why your art is worth investing in.
  5. After you realize you are worthy of support, ask in a personal manner.  This is the other reason why people may not be supporting your art.  You need to ask personally!  We as individuals are inundated with donation requests.  Sending a form letter is going to end up with all the other form letters, “filed” in the trash mainly.  The reason people give to one particular cause over another is when they feel connected with the cause.  Connect with people again and ask them personally for support.  If you know so and so, don’t send them the same old form letter, write a personal ask to them or take them out for coffee.  Form letters are not working anymore, and we have been hiding behind them due to our fears of asking for support.  Get up the courage to relate personally again.  You will find all the support you need this way.
  6. Collaborate more! Due to the saturation point and the economy, we need to collaborate more, not less.  We need to get over the mentality that there is not enough to go around and instead share in the bounty that is here.  I want to challenge you to find at least one creative collaboration for 2011 and put your passion into it. Take the time to look around you and see how we can help support each other!
  7. Discover the talent that is in your own back yard to expand your resources.  I hear people talk about capacity issues, but there is an easy solution.  I could get in trouble for discussing this one, but I feel that we are too hung up on qualifications and letters after our names.  Of course, if you need to see a doctor you want a qualified one.  I myself am applying to an Arts Administration Master’s program next year to give myself a little more polish.  However, the talents of individuals can go unnoticed and unused due to this mentality.  For example, I was looking for a graphic design artist.  I interviewed several for the job.  There were some that had the fancier degrees and some that didn’t.  I actually ended up hiring a person that was intelligent and talented, someone without the fancier degree.  You see, education is important, but so are the individual gifts, talents and experiences that we have.  Do not overlook someone simply based on credentials.  Do not place someone strictly based on credentials either.  Instead, take the time to discover that person’s individual gifts and how they can be useful.

To be continued tomorrow…

Audience development for the arts community – time to open up and share

I’m working on a juicy blog for the future.  In the meantime, I have been thinking about how challenging it is to get people to talk about audience development, yet everyone seems to have questions.  So why is the arts community as a group shying away from major audience development discussion?  Here are my thoughts:

  1. People are afraid to speak up.  One reason may be that they do not want to appear like they have any issues.  Another reason may be that they are afraid their idea will be stolen.   I believe that if you are too closed to sharing, you won’t be open enough to receiving.  Also, if the idea is truly yours, only you will be able to establish it with your own style, which will make it unique no matter who tries to implement it.  Remember, we have nothing to fear but fear itself (thank you Roosevelt and Thoreau)!
  2. Maybe we do not know as a group where to go to discuss these issues.  I at times get DM’d on twitter asking a specific question about audience development.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we had an entire community helping each other out with these problems?  Here are a few places you can ask our community:
    • On twitter, I am attempting to use the hashtag #auddev to post great articles and to share fabulous ideas.  Maybe we could use this hashtag to ask and answer questions about audience development.  Then we would have a place to not only centrally ask a question, but to find some amazing answers.
    • I have started a LinkedIn Group, for the same reasons, and you have more characters to use for your post.  Please feel free to join the group and post your questions and advice for others.  This board can accommodate numerous discussions at once.
    • If you are located in Chicago, there is a group called Arts Engagement Exchange – A Network To Build Chicago Arts Audiences. They have included a discussion board on various audience development topics, an easy way to work with your peers on new ideas.
    • Your local arts alliance may have discussion groups to join.
    • I will post more as I find them.  Please comment if you know of an arts group discussing audience development.
  3. We do not collectively have the perception that everyone can be successful and instead have a competition mentality.  This might fall into the fear category, but I feel it is a point that needs to be addressed separately.  I see groups afraid to collaborate due to this mentality.  We can keep viewing each other as dog eat dog, but wouldn’t it be better to view each other as resources for support?   The choice is ours.
  4. We don’t have time to talk about audience development since we are busy people.  This seems like a catch-22.  We don’t have time to discuss audience development which is an important issue to each and every one of us?  Maybe we need to make some time or look at our priorities so we can find this new support for the arts, our very own arts community.
  5. This point could get me in trouble personally, but in general, we need to stop attempting to rely on experts for all the answers. Audience development is about building support through relationships.  This means as an arts community, the biggest audience development ideal is to communicate and support each other.
  6. We aren’t used to looking wide and far enough. It would be good to start viewing the world as our oyster.  In terms of the next best audience development idea, this idea can come from anyone, anywhere!  Of course you need to evaluate every idea with a grain of salt.  What may work for you and your audiences may not work for someone else and their audiences.  But just think, we would all have a better chance of finding what is best for us if we are all willing to keep our eyes open and share ideas, drawbacks and successes.
  7. Last point, maybe some people in our group do not know what audience development really is.  If you have questions, please remember that there are no stupid questions, only people too dumb not to ask (is there a softer way to put this?).

We can learn from each other the best practices for audience development.  I am a firm believer in you get what you give too.  If you are in need of advice, perhaps it is time for you to help someone else to get the ball rolling.  So, go out there and share! I am here and hear to help.

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Arts saturation point and audience development

I had been reading the article in the Ottawa Citizen:  Where have all the theatregoers gone?

The article takes on the question after a theater run that was supposed to run 5 weeks closed one week early due to not enough audience.

The problem seems to be that while Ottawa theatre companies have been springing up faster than revelations about wannabe lobbyists, there aren’t enough audience members, and especially new ones, to go around. Blame whatever you want — competing entertainment, a citizenry too pooped at the end of the day to go anywhere — we don’t attend theatre in the numbers needed to sustain what could be a defining aspect of Ottawa life.

I have been seeing this phenomenon happen right here in Boulder, CO.  Have we hit the saturation point of the arts in ratio to the amount of audience members?

According to the 2000 Census, Boulder County has 291,288 people.  Currently I am counting:

  • Around 10 dance organizations
  • Around 20 music organizations
  • Around 13 theatre organizations
  • Around 18 art/museum organizations and galleries

This is not including individual artists or bands or art venues and associations which have their own events.

Now how many people out of our population actually attends arts events?  The average around the  U.S. has been about 29% according to NEA’s
State and Regional Differences in Arts Participation: A Geographic Analysis of the 2008 SPPA

We need to break it down further.  Average percentages for these individual disciplines in Colorado:

  • 3% for dance (average ballet and other)
  • 8% for music
  • 12-13% theater (average musical/non-musical)
  • 22% art museums and galleries

So for theatre in our area, if we do the math, we have close to 37,000 people that would enjoy seeing a theatre event.  We have 13 theatre organizations competing for those 37,000 people.  If all were to get a fair share of this segment, there would be a little over 3,000 people per theatre company and most companies average 5 shows per season with 3-6 runs per show.  A further complication is the fact that someone who enjoys the theatre might also enjoy dance or music events.  Now imagine the scheduling problems in our county.  You could end up with a weekend that has 3 or 4 theater productions, 2 or 3 dance productions, 3 major benefit events, and 2 or 3 big music events.  Visual art events seem to pop up all year round, and they are plentiful!  Suddenly 3,000 people (assuming you are getting your full fair share, wink, wink) are not enough to fill houses.

So do you think that the arts may have a saturation problem where arts are a-plenty?  How do we deal with this growing problem?  We have come into the day and age that people want to put on their own show and start their own arts company.  Many people want to be the creator!

I feel that audience development is the answer to this challenge.  Remember the 4 C’s of audience development:

  1. Connection – you need to get connected to the people that would enjoy your event/art.  Make the extra efforts to build relationships!
  2. Collaboration – maybe it is time to consider bigger projects by collaborating.  These projects will attract a larger audience that will benefit all involved.
  3. Community – the arts need to begin acting like a community.  Perhaps a community calendar could be set up so it helps alleviate the problem of too many art events scheduled at one time.
  4. Caring – since there is a competition factor, wouldn’t it make sense to care a little more about your audience and your art?  Implement ways that show that you care: create high quality art and engage with your audience regularly.

If an artist or organization takes the time and effort for audience development, the saturation problem won’t be as much of a factor.  Audience development is about building relationships with people, not numbers.  It is about creating a happy and loyal community around your art.  With audience development, you can thrive in any condition or situation that you come up against!

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,

Shoshana
